Subway service changes: December 29-January 1

There are service changes on the subway this holiday weekend. Here’s how that will affect how you get around.
Updated December 29, 2023 11:00 a.m.

That's a wrap for 2023, folks!

If you're heading to Times Square to ring in the new year on Sunday night, keep in mind that exits at the Times Sq-42 St  station may be subject to temporary closures depending on crowding levels. Some entrances and exits at 42 St-Bryant Park , 5 Av , 7 Av , and 59 St-Columbus Circle  may also be temporarily closed. You may want to use nearby stations, including 42 St-Port Authority Bus Terminal , 50 St , and 34 St-Penn Station .

On Sunday, New Year's Eve, the subway is running on a regular Sunday schedule. On Monday, New Year's Day, the subway will also run on a Sunday schedule.

For Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North riders visiting the city to celebrate, we're operating extra trains into the city on New Year's Eve, and leaving the city after midnight. Alcohol is not allowed on LIRR and Metro-North trains, platforms, and stations from noon on NYE to noon on New Year's Day.

On Monday, January 1, LIRR will operate on a weekend schedule. Metro-North will operate on a special reduced schedule. Use the TrainTime app or visit our schedules page to see all options for your trip.

And don't forget to sign up for the MTA Weekender, a newsletter sent every Friday. You'll get these service changes directly in your inbox, with more than enough time to plan your weekend travel. Subscribe here.
