Subway and rail service changes: August 18-21

There are service changes on the subway, LIRR, and Metro-North this weekend. Here’s how that will affect how you get around.
Updated August 18, 2023 9:00 a.m.

We made it through another week — and we have an important reminder for you: On Sunday, August 20, fare changes take effect on subways, buses, commuter railroads, and paratransit. Learn how this will affect your ride.

There's also a new way to save on subway and bus fares when you tap to pay with OMNY. Now, you can start tapping any day of the week and earn free rides after your 12th paid tap within that 7-day period. It's like a 7-Day Unlimited MetroCard but better —  you don't have to pay upfront and never pay for trips you don't take.

Here's what's happening this weekend (also viewable as a handy map):

  • Uptown   trains are running express between Canal St and Midtown
  • Manhattan-bound   trains are running on the   line from Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av to W 4 St-Wash Sq
  •  trains aren't running between 34 St-Herald Sq and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr
  •  trains aren't stopping at Norwood-205 St
  • Queens-bound   trains are running on the   line from 5 Av/53 St to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av
  •  trains aren't running between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av
  •  trains aren't running between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Crescent St
  •  trains aren't running between 8 Av and 14 St-Union Sq

For more detailed breakdowns, keep on scrolling — we’ve also got travel alternatives for stations that will be closed or skipped.

And don't forget to sign up for the MTA Weekender, a newsletter sent every Friday. You'll get these service changes directly in your inbox, with more than enough time to plan your weekend travel. Subscribe here
