The Coney Island Yard complex is one of the largest rapid transit yards in North America, directly serving four main track lines. It includes three train yards that can store up to 881 subway cars at one time. The complex is also home to car wash, maintenance, repair facilities, substations, signal towers, and power and communications cables supporting operations.
But the yard is near Coney Island Creek.
During Superstorm Sandy, coastal flooding caused by climate change flooded the creek. It inundated the complex with over 27 million gallons of saltwater and debris, causing damage to the tracks and the cables that power trains.
We pumped out the water, made repairs, and got trains running again after the storm.
We completed the flood mitigation work for the line in May 2020. Now we need to protect the West End Line so that we can keep you moving.
What are we doing:
- Installing a multi-panel flood barrier system
- Installing a debris shield on the Coney Island Creek Drawbridge
- Building a 2900-foot floodwall from the north end of the drawbridge to the Stillwell Yard
- Adding brackets along the wall for new communications cables
- Replacing existing switches with new submersible switches in two locations
We will need uninterrupted access to the West End line track between Bay 50 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av to complete this work efficiently and safely.
What service changes to expect:
Beginning Friday, September 17, at 11:45 p.m. through January 2022, there will be no train service between Bay 50 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av.
trains will run between Norwood-205 St and Bay 50 St, the last stop.
During weekday rush hours additional service will run between Norwood-205 St and Bay Pkwy.
How to get around:
For service to/from Coney Island-Stillwell Av, transfer between the and trains at 62 St-New Utrecht Av, 36 St or Atlantic Av-Barclays Center.
ADA-accessible transfers are available in Brooklyn between and trains at 62 St-New Utrecht Av or Atlantic Av-Barclays Center. In Manhattan, transfer between and trains at W 4 St-Wash Sq or B'way-Lafayette St.
Note: Bay 50 St, where the will terminate, is not an ADA-accessible station. The Bay Pkwy station will be the final accessible stop.
