MTA Bridges and Tunnels to Implement Ban on Empty Tractor-Trailers and Tandem Trucks Starting Sunday at 10:00 p.m.
MTA Crews Prepositioned to Respond to Weather-Related Issues
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is closely monitoring weather conditions this weekend to ensure safe, reliable service. High winds, including gusts of up to 60 miles per hour on eastern Long Island, and 2 to 3 inches of rain, including short durations of rates of ½-inch to 1-inch per hour, are expected to impact the metropolitan area Sunday and into Monday. MTA employees will be poised to respond to any weather-related issues, including removal of trees that may fall across tracks.
“Rain events, no matter how big or small, are treated seriously with crews prepositioned at vulnerable areas in order to address issues quickly,” said New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Subways Demetrius Crichlow. “While the subway system can pump millions of gallons of water on a dry day, customers should still check MYmta prior to traveling, particularly during the overnight hours.”
Based on the current weather forecast, MTA Bridges and Tunnels will implement a ban on empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks beginning Sunday, Dec. 17, at 10:00 p.m. The ban is expected to be in place until 2:00 p.m., Monday, Dec. 18.
Pedestrian walkways at the Cross Bay Bridge and Marine Parkway Bridge will be closed during this time. Pedestrian walkways at the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the Henry Hudson Bridge will remain open as weather conditions permit.
“MTA Bridges and Tunnels is prepared for the high winds forecasted to pass through the area Sunday into Monday, which pose particular concern on bridges,” said MTA Bridges and Tunnels Vice President & Chief of Operations Richard L. Hildebrand II. “We will be closely monitoring wind speeds and conditions at our facilities and be ready to respond to any weather-related issues.”
