Project Will Repair Structural Defects Caused by Age-Related Deterioration, Improving Reliability on the 89-Year-Old Line
Express Track to be Shutdown 24/7 Between July 5 and Winter 2022, Replaced by Local Service
Project is Part of MTA’s Historic $51.5 Billion 2020 – 2024 Capital Program
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the next phase of its Concourse Line Reconstruction along the lines in the Bronx will begin on Tuesday, July 5. The project will restore this critical line to a state of good repair by addressing structural defects between the 161 St- Yankee Stadium and Bedford Park Boulevard stations. This work will result in better service, improved reliability and an upgraded customer experience.
Work in this project to rehabilitate the 89-year-old line includes:

Mitigating leaks to prevent future corrosion and deterioration

Repairing or replacing corroded structural beams and columns

Repairing spalled concrete and cracks

Removing and replacing radio antenna

Repairing street level vents
“We appreciate our customers’ patience as we make these necessary repairs to ensure reliable service for the next 90 years and beyond,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. “Ensuring improvement projects are completed as efficiently as possible sometimes requires these short-term service changes.”
“The MTA’s 2020-24 Capital Program is committed to state of good repair and upgrades to system infrastructure, this work advances those objectives” said MTA Construction and Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “We are also minimizing the impact to riders while we complete this work, by maintaining service.”
“In order to continue to bring riders back to the subway, we need to ensure faster and more reliable service,” said New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Subways Demetrius Crichlow. “State of good repair work will bring us closer to the goal of providing a state-of-the-art transit system.”
Beginning Monday, July 5 and continuing through December and for an additional four weeks in 2023, all service will operate on the local track in both directions while the express track is closed. During the AM rush, downtown trains will operate local between 205 St and 145 St. During the PM rush, uptown trains will operate local between 145 St and 205 St. Street level vent repair along Grand Concourse between 161 and 192 streets began last month for this project. Beyond the aforementioned service changes, weekend outages will be necessary through March 2024 and the project will be completed by September 2024. Additional dates and service impacts will be announced at a later date.
The MTA will post both print and digital signage in stations, along with announcements in stations and on trains ahead of the scheduled work. Customer service notifications will be made on trains, posted at affected stations and on the MTA website, the MYmta app and social media.
