Bathrooms at 18 Subway Stations Across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx will Reopen on Rolling Basis from Monday, July 3
Follows Successful Phased Reopening of Bathrooms in Winter and Spring
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced 36 bathrooms at 18 additional subway stations will begin reopening to the public on Monday, July 3 on a rolling basis. The bathrooms, one male and one female, will be open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a one-hour closure for cleaning from 12:00 pm to 1:00 p.m. With these planned reopenings, the vast majority of bathrooms within the subway system will be open to the public by Labor Day.
“Reopening bathrooms is another way for New York City Transit to provide customers relief when they have to go on the go for a more comfortable experience in the subway,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. “These refreshed and reopened bathrooms, delivered by the Stations and Facilities divisions at our Department of Subways, show that NYCT is committed to providing faster, safer, and better service to customers across the subway system.”
Prior to reopening the MTA utilized closures to perform needed maintenance including:
- New motion activated faucets
- New hand dryers, dispensers
- New/painted privacy panels
- New lighting
- Tile grouting
- New signage reflecting hours of operations
- Paint ceiling
- Deep cleaning efforts

NYC Transit began reopening public bathrooms following COVID-19 safety related closures on January 9 at nine stations. Since then, NYCT has carried out a phased approach to reopening bathrooms across the transit system with 24 bathrooms reopening at 12 stations in the early spring and 24 additional bathrooms reopening throughout the end of May and early June at 12 more stations.
