New Elevators, Additional New and Upgraded Features Will Make Stations Accessible and Improve Customer Experience
Scarsdale Station Overpass will be Lifted to Avoid Future Collisions
MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced a full slate of upgrades and improvements to Hartsdale, Scarsdale and Purdy’s, three stations along the Harlem Line, that will improve customer comfort and add accessibility features. These upgrades, part of the MTA Capital Program, will provide street and platform elevators, among other improvements including, ADA-compliant sidewalks with curb ramps, new public staircases, increased electrical capacity, and new CCTV.

We’re giving our customers the best possible experience while traveling on Metro-North trains, improving our infrastructure and increasing accessibility,” said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi. “As Metro-North ridership continues to recover, customers will see exceptional, modernized and accessible stations that will serve Metro-North and our customers for years to come.”
“We are using every tool at our disposal to make stations accessible with modernized equipment that will provide customers with smoother and reliable service,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “The MTA’s historic investment of billions of dollars for accessibility is indicative of our ongoing commitment to a fully accessible transit system.”
“With every new ADA station, we can attract new customers, and close the geographic gaps between accessible stations on our railroads,” said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo. “As a regular Metro-North customer, I know firsthand the new elevators will improve the experience at these stations for customers with mobility disabilities, and the countless riders who travel with luggage, strollers, bicycles and more.”
“The start of these projects along the Harlem Line is great news for the communities they serve and Westchester County. Modern public transportation is a key to survival for our metropolitan area. It's a huge benefit to residents and a selling point to corporations,” said Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. These station upgrades will greatly enhance accessibility for the disabled, increase safety and improve customer comfort. I continue to support investments in public transportation, which the train riding public needs and should have.”

Accessibility for all is of the utmost importance and this new elevator will make a huge difference to many people.”
Scarsdale
Improvements include:
• An ADA compliant sidewalk from the elevator at street level.
• An enclosed elevator tower.
• An ADA compliant elevator will be installed to serve customers who need to use the inbound platform. A new walkway will connect the elevator platform level landing to station platform and overpass.
• The current overpass to the inbound platform, which has been struck by passing trains in the past, and the staircase leading to/from it, will be raised seven inches.
• Benches, leaning bars, new LED lighting and heaters will be installed on the existing overpass.
• Motorcycle parking will be built on at street level.
Hartsdale
Improvements include:
• Two enclosed elevator towers located on each platform side serving street level to platform level and overpass level.
• Two ADA compliant elevators.
• ADA compliant sidewalks from each elevator at street level.
• An elevated walkway connecting the elevator tower to the existing overpass level.
• Benches, leaning bars, new LED lighting and heaters will be installed on the existing overpass.
Purdy’s
Improvements include:
• An enclosed elevator tower serving parking lot level and roadway above level on the north end of the parking lot.
• A new ADA compliant elevator, all necessary components and equipment.
• An ADA compliant sidewalk from the new elevator to the existing station entrance including LED lighting.
The contract was awarded to contractor Paul J. Scariano, Inc. Crews began prep work in Hartsdale in late February. They will mobilize at Scarsdale in late March and Purdy’s in mid-April. The project is expected to be completed in March 2023.
