New Elevators, Additional New and Upgraded Features Will Make Stations Accessible and Improve Customer Experience

Scarsdale Station Overpass will be Lifted to Avoid Future Collisions

MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced a full slate of upgrades and improvements to Hartsdale, Scarsdale and Purdy’s, three stations along the Harlem Line, that will improve customer comfort and add accessibility features. These upgrades, part of the MTA Capital Program, will provide street and platform elevators, among other improvements including, ADA-compliant sidewalks with curb ramps, new public staircases, increased electrical capacity, and new CCTV.

Renewing and upgrading these three stations is at the core of everything we do. We’re giving our customers the best possible experience while traveling on Metro-North trains, improving our infrastructure and increasing accessibility,” said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi. “As Metro-North ridership continues to recover, customers will see exceptional, modernized and accessible stations that will serve Metro-North and our customers for years to come.”

“We are using every tool at our disposal to make stations accessible with modernized equipment that will provide customers with smoother and reliable service,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “The MTA’s historic investment of billions of dollars for accessibility is indicative of our ongoing commitment to a fully accessible transit system.”

“With every new ADA station, we can attract new customers, and close the geographic gaps between accessible stations on our railroads,” said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo. “As a regular Metro-North customer, I know firsthand the new elevators will improve the experience at these stations for customers with mobility disabilities, and the countless riders who travel with luggage, strollers, bicycles and more.”

“The start of these projects along the Harlem Line is great news for the communities they serve and Westchester County. Modern public transportation is a key to survival for our metropolitan area. It's a huge benefit to residents and a selling point to corporations,” said Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. These station upgrades will greatly enhance accessibility for the disabled, increase safety and improve customer comfort. I continue to support investments in public transportation, which the train riding public needs and should have.”

“I commend Metro-North for investing in important upgrades to the Purdys station as part of the capital plan approved by the state legislature,” said New York State Senator Pete Harckham. “This will help to attract riders back for work and leisure.”

“I’m thrilled about the upcoming additions and upgrades to the Scarsdale and Hartsdale train stations. Our transit system is a key to our region and must be accessible to everyone. The new elevators will improve the experience at these stations for those with mobility disabilities, as well as for riders who travel with luggage, strollers, bicycles and more,” said Assemblymember Amy Paulin, Chair of the Assembly Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions. “I will continue to advocate for investing in mass transit projects like this, which improve the daily lives of all who work and live in Scarsdale, Hartsdale and our region.”
“I look forward to the completion of the elevator project which will give people with disabilities full and equal access to Metro-North services in Hartsdale,” said Assemblymember Tom Abinanti, Chair of the Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities. “The two elevators will make it easier for all of our residents to use the train station, including those with carriages and walkers.”

“I have the privilege of serving on the NYS Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities and, as such, have learned so much about the challenges facing the disability community, said Assemblymember Chris Burdick. “I’m thrilled that the MTA will begin construction on an ADA compliant elevator, sidewalk, and enclosed elevator tower at the Purdy’s Station. Accessibility for all is of the utmost importance and this new elevator will make a huge difference to many people.”
