Metro-North Waterbury Branch Update, Nov. 22

Updated November 22, 2021 2:00 p.m.

In partnership with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, we've just completed the installation of Positive Train Control on the entire Waterbury branch! Now the full Metro-North Railroad system is online with this modern way of monitoring and controlling train movement across the region.

While working on this project, which began in April 2019 and was finished at the beginning of this month, here's some of what was accomplished:

  • The signal system was upgraded on the entire line, allowing trains to safely travel at speeds of up to 60 mph
  • Over 13,000 rail ties were replaced to keep train tracks in a good state of repair
  • Sidings were added where trains can pass each other at Derby, Beacon Falls, and just south of  Waterbury, allowing the possibility for increased train service and providing more operational flexibility to reduce congestion

With the completion of this work, you can expect to experience more reliable service while riding with us. We'll even have the ability to add more train service in the future.

Thanks for riding with us!
