Subway and rail service changes: January 6-9

There are service changes on the subway, LIRR, and Metro-North this weekend. Here’s how that will affect how you get around.

Hello, riders! Welcome to the first full weekend of 2023. Whether you're planning on getting outdoors or partaking in cozy indoor activities, public transit is the way to go.

Whatever this weekend has in store for you, you'll want to know about service changes before you head out. Here's what's going on:

  •  trains aren't running in Brooklyn
  •  trains aren't running between Court Sq and Nassau Av
  •  trains aren't running between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av
  •  trains are running in two sections on a modified schedule

Major subway service changes

 trains, Brooklyn and Bronx

Trains are not running between Bowling Green and Crown Hts-Utica Av/New Lots Av in either direction from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday because of signal improvement work.

  •  trains are running between Woodlawn and Bowling Green, the last stop.
  • For service to/from stations between Borough Hall and New Lots Av, take the   train, which will also run overnight in Brooklyn over the weekend.
  •  trains also provide alternate service between Borough Hall and Franklin Av-Medgar Evers College.
  • Transfer between the   and   at Fulton St, or use the 42 St Shuttle  .
  • Reminder:   trains don't run in Brooklyn on weekends.

Woodlawn-bound trains are running on the express track from 167 St to Mosholu Pkwy from 3:45 a.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Sunday because of track replacement.

  • For service to/from bypassed stations, take a Manhattan-bound train.

From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, trains are running every 16 minutes between 149 St-Grand Concourse and Woodlawn. This is because of track replacement. 

  • Some Woodlawn-bound trains are not stopping at 138 St-Grand Concourse, and are ending at 149 St-Grand Concourse.
  • Transfer at 149 St-Grand Concourse to continue your trip.

 trains, Brooklyn and Queens

Trains are not running between Court Sq and Nassau Av in either direction from 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday because of accessibility work.

  • Free shuttle buses are running between Court Sq and Nassau Av. Look for signs outside your station for walking directions to the shuttle bus stop.
  •  trains are running between Nassau Av and Church Av.

 trains, Brooklyn

Trains are running in two sections on a modified schedule from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday because of track maintenance.

  • trains are running between:
    • 8 Av and Broadway Junction, every 8 minutes
    • Broadway Junction and Canarsie-Rockaway Pkwy, every 24 minutes.
  • Transfer at Broadway Junction to continue your trip.
  • At Sutter Av, Livonia Av, New Lots Av, and E 105 St, board all trains on the Rockaway Pkwy-bound track.

 trains, Brooklyn

Trains are not running between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av in either direction from 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday because of track maintenance.

  • Free shuttle buses are running between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Look for signs outside your station for walking directions to the shuttle bus stop.
  •  trains are running between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and Kings Hwy.
  • For direct service to/from Coney Island-Stillwell Av, take   trains.

Other service changes

 trains, Manhattan

From 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, Manhattan-bound   trains are running on the express track from Canal St to 59 St-Columbus Circle, and Queens-bound   trains are running on the express track from Canal St to 42 St-Port Authority Bus Terminal. This is because of signal modernization work.

  • For service to/from Spring St and 23 St, take a downtown train.
  • For service to 50 St, take the  .
  • For service from 50 St, take a downtown train, or take the   to 7 Av/53 St and then the   to 59 St-Columbus Circle.

 trains, Manhattan

Coney Island-bound trains are not stopping at 155 St from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday because of track maintenance.

  • For service to/from 155 St, take a Bronx-bound   train.

 trains, Queens

Manhattan-bound trains are running on the express track from Forest Hills-71 Av to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av from 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday because of track maintenance.

  • For service to/from bypassed stations, take a Queens-bound train.

Long Island Rail Road service changes

Hempstead Branch

Westbound trains are not stopping at Elmont-UBS Arena, Queens Village, and Hollis from 12 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday because of switch installation work east of Jamaica.

  • Buses are available between Bellerose, Queens Village, Hollis, and Jamaica, connecting to trains at both Bellerose and Jamaica.
  • Disney on Ice attendees: Use the shuttle train between Jamaica and Belmont Park. Eastbound service at Elmont-UBS Arena is unaffected.
  • You may experience up to 30 minutes of additional travel time.

Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma Branches

Westbound trains are not stopping at Elmont-UBS Arena on Saturday and Sunday because of switch installation work east of Jamaica.

  • Use the shuttle train between Jamaica and Belmont Park instead.

Metro-North Railroad service changes

New Canaan Line

Trains are not running between New Canaan and Stamford in both directions from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Monday because of Connecticut DOT bridge work east of Stamford.

  • Buses are running between New Canaan and Stamford. See the full bus schedule.
  • Inbound buses will leave 10-30 minutes earlier than normal train times.
  • The last trains to run on Friday evening will be the 10:58 p.m. from Stamford (10:06 p.m. from Grand Central) and the 11:25 p.m. from New Canaan.
